The American Amputee Foundation, Inc. (AAF) was established in 1975
as a national information clearinghouse and referral center serving
amputees, their families, and care providers. The foundation researches
and gathers information on amputation including studies, product
information, available services, self-help publications, and hundreds of articles concerning amputation and related conditions.

Thousands of calls and letters asking for both direct and indirect assistance are answered every year by foundation staff. Over the many years of its existence, AAF has helped with insurance claims, justification letters to payers, indirect financial help with prosthetics, technical assistance in developing self-help programs, life care planning services, and just general questions about amputation. We also provide hospital visitations and maintain a list of national support groups for referral purposes. To locate an AAF chapter or amputee support group near you, please contact us.

Diabetes is the leading cause of lower extremity amputation and, as a result, the rate of amputation is growing annually, as is the rate of diabetes. Combined with other disease related amputation and amputation resulting from trauma, the estimated number of amputations per year is 156,000 and growing. This amputee population is becoming very active in peer support, education programs, and legislation issues.

The foundation asks that you become involved with this movement by supporting your local programs or through your direct support of our efforts. The national office of AAF can be contacted at:
